Incidents and Breaches

Whilst similar and often used interchangeably, the terms Incidents, Breaches, and Cyber Attacks are slightly different.

Security Incidents

• An employee accidentally sharing access to a restricted file with a co-worker or external person
• An employee uses a personal device (laptop, phone, etc.) without authorisation to access work-related files

Data Breach

• A security incident that results in the disclosure of confidential data to an unauthorised person
• Human behaviour/error (clicking on links, weak passwords, etc.) or a system weakness (virus checkers, firewalls, etc.)
